Good Morning!
I've set out in life to stashbust.
I'm stashbusting in a BIG WAY!
I've taken to knitting shawls from the patterns I write... but I stripe them with any yarns in most any weights that I have. Because I use natural fibres, the resulting product can be overdyed with natural dyes.
The reason for doing this is that once you knit up this disjointed multi-coloured shawl, it becomes more whole once it is overdyed. I make sure to use a dye that is rich and dark, and then go to town on the shawls.
The ones in this photo are done with an alum mordant at 18% WOF, Cream of tar tar at 8% WOF, Logwood extract at 2% WOF, and Quebracho extract at 7% WOF.
It is actually two shawls in the dyepot, and I am going to let them sit overnight tonight. (One of the reasons to let them sit overnight tonight is that my bathroom got tiled yesterday, and the grout is still setting.... I can't use my tub to rinse the shawls!)

Dark
Naturally dyeing black.
SERIOUSLY!
This has eluded me for a long long time.
I have tried many times, and come up short.
BUT! Guess what!?
I did it!!! I really did! I dyed some cotton fabric. And guess how I did it!?
Well, i'm going to tell you. Because I tell all of my secrets!
I used:
Alum/Iron/Cream of Tartar as mordants
and I used:
logwood extract/chestnut/onion skins/madder roots
WOW!
I literally danced when I rinsed this out.
Today is a win!

I taught a classs last night!
We learned stove-top natural dyeing!
Seriously- I had the best people in my class last night.
We dyed with onion skins and cochineal.

Guess what I did today!?
I DYED SO MUCH YARN!!!
With so many colours!!
Purple and pink and red and orange and green and yellow and brown!! OHHH!!! I am so in love with the brown!!!
Want to see it!? Well... that will be a few days. BUT SERIOUSLY!! GET EXCITED!

Finished!
I started a sweater on Friday, and finished it last night! Ends are woven in! Buttons are on!
It's Finn that I spun into thick and thin singles. I naturally dyed it.

Three
Good morning to you!
Three new patterns have gone up on my Ravelry page in the last day!
I have a both at Knit City next weekend, and figured I needed to have samples of all of my yarns.... so I wrote patterns to go with them!
I'm getting that nervous-butterflyish feeling in my tummy about next weekend! Besides having many things to complete... I get to meet people that I totally look up to in the yarn world!
I need to do a huge shout out to the person who takes my photos!!
She is Softsweater on Ravelry... and publishes her own amazing patterns
She has a Flickr of her rad photos
And she has a blog!!

Dyes to harvest around Vancouver- Coast Salish Territories
Want a list of the natural dyes that you can harvest around Vancouver- Caosst Salish Territories?
Here it is!!
Lupin Leaves... Not the pretty purple flowers... the leaves. They Dye green! SO GREAT!! I'm in love with these guys. They grow naturally here... and pretty well anywhere outside of the city past may you can find them! (until late July i'm pretty sure... )
Ivy... I've not dyed with these in a long while... And also note that the English Ivy that grows around the city chokes out plants. It is totally invasive... so I don't feel bad harvesting this one! Makes greenish
Blackberries. Another invasive one! (But tasty!) - Pueple
Onion Skins- Yellow. Beautiful yellow with alum mordant... but GREEN! with an iron mordant! LOVE!
Walnut husks- Brown. Such a nice one too! And you get to eat the walnuts! Win win!
Oak leaves- yellowish colour... pretty nice..
Black eyes susans- yellowish... nice dye!
Fennel- i've heard of using this... to make yellow. Not tried it myself yet
Black tea- Good, simple, and pretty colour!
Black beans- The water what you soak black beans in (before you cook the dried ones) It makes blue!!!!
Horse Tail- Yellow... i'm solar dyeing with it right now... can't wait to see the results!
Fig Tree Leaves- Yellow- never tried this one!
Sage- Never tried... but makes green!

Back to life
It feels good to sit silently.
Being away is adventreful... But I am happy to be home cooking up natural dyes...
Also, we got an indoor hammock... Which is where I am knitting right now.
Also... I have Shetland fibre cooking in lac and a black bean stock solution. Also, some merino in lac and black bean.

Solar dye day!
Today I taught a class on solar dyeing at Baaad Anna's Yarn Store. It was so rad to get to spread the love of natural dyes.
I also donated some pre-made solar dye jars to the Knit Social yarn retreat that is on right now!
With those jars... All the recipients have to do is put the jar in a sunny window, or outside in the sun for a few weeks. (or even a few months!) and then rinse what is in the jar (while wearing gloves!)
I have a jar made up for myself also, and will post the results here!

Knit Social Yarn Retreat
I put together solar dye jars for everyone on the Knit Social retreat happening next weekend.
Each jar has logwood, lac, and alum. The yarn is the Briggs & Little soft spun.
Each jar is to be left in a sunny window (or on a balcony) for a month. At the end of the month, you rinse it... And you have a sample o naturally dyed yarn!
